Recessed Lighting

Professional recessed lighting installation for new construction and retrofit applications. Clean, modern illumination that adds value and functionality to any room.

Modern Lighting That Works

Recessed lighting delivers clean lines and focused illumination without the visual clutter of fixtures hanging from your ceiling. Whether you're updating a kitchen, finishing a basement, or adding task lighting to a home office, properly installed recessed lights provide the coverage you need.

We handle both new construction installations—where wiring runs are straightforward—and retrofit projects in existing ceilings. Retrofit work requires careful planning to avoid joists, ductwork, and existing wiring, and we'll walk you through what's possible in your space before we start cutting holes.

Code-Compliant Installation

Every recessed fixture must be IC-rated (insulation contact) if it will touch insulation in your ceiling, and we verify clearances from combustible materials per NEC requirements. We also ensure your circuit can handle the additional load or add a dedicated circuit if needed.

LED retrofit kits and modern recessed fixtures draw far less power than older incandescent cans, but load calculations still matter—especially when you're adding six or eight fixtures to a room.

What We Install

  • Kitchen lighting – General illumination and task lighting over counters and islands
  • Living spaces – Ambient lighting with dimmer control for flexibility
  • Bathrooms – Wet-location rated fixtures where required by code
  • Basements and finished attics – New circuits and proper spacing for even coverage
  • Exterior soffits – Weather-rated fixtures for entryways and overhangs

We'll help you determine fixture placement, beam angles, and color temperature so the lighting works for how you actually use the space.

Layout and Spacing

Recessed lights need proper spacing to avoid dark spots and uneven coverage. We calculate placement based on ceiling height, room dimensions, and the beam spread of your chosen fixtures. For an 8-foot ceiling, fixtures are typically spaced 4 feet apart; higher ceilings require adjustment.

Wall-wash applications and accent lighting follow different rules, and we'll design the layout to match your goals—whether that's even ambient light or highlighting specific features.

Dimming and Controls

Most LED recessed fixtures are dimmable, but they require compatible dimmers. We install the right controls and verify smooth dimming across the full range with no flicker or buzzing. Smart switches and app-based controls are also an option if you want scheduling or voice control.

All work is permitted and inspected where required. You'll have lighting that meets code and performs exactly as expected.

How it works
01

Site Assessment

We evaluate your ceiling type, existing wiring, and insulation to determine the best approach—new construction or retrofit—and identify any obstacles like joists or ductwork.

02

Layout Design

We calculate fixture spacing and placement based on ceiling height, room size, and your lighting goals, then review the plan with you before any cutting begins.

03

Circuit and Load Check

We verify your existing circuit can handle the additional load or install a new dedicated circuit if needed, ensuring everything is sized correctly.

04

Installation and Wiring

We cut openings, run wiring, install IC-rated fixtures with proper clearances, and connect dimmer or smart controls as specified.

05

Testing and Cleanup

We test every fixture, verify dimming performance, and clean up all debris. If a permit was required, we coordinate the inspection.

Common questions
Can recessed lights be installed in an existing ceiling without major damage?+

Yes. Retrofit recessed fixtures are designed for existing ceilings and require only the fixture-sized hole. We fish wiring through the ceiling cavity and patch any small access holes if needed. The challenge is working around joists and existing utilities, which we assess before starting.

Do I need IC-rated fixtures if my ceiling has insulation?+

Absolutely. If insulation will be in contact with the fixture, NEC requires an IC-rated housing that is designed to dissipate heat safely. Non-IC fixtures must maintain clearance from insulation, which is often impractical in finished ceilings.

How many recessed lights can I add to an existing circuit?+

It depends on the circuit's current load and capacity. Modern LED recessed fixtures draw very little power, so you can often add several to a 15-amp circuit. We calculate the total load and either use an existing circuit with capacity or install a new one if needed.
